The STRAIGHT-UP DEATH meme
  1. Pick a character.
  2. Put their name and subject line in the header.
  3. Tagging people: RNG or just pick one below. Needless to say, this meme may contain TRIGGERS for death, violence and suicide.
  4. Posting people: the person who tagged you is now DYING.
  5. Have fun.
OPTIONS:
  1. Illness: Self-explanatory. You're on your deathbed from a long and drawn-out illness. Time to call someone to your side for comfort, or for a confession...
  2. I Cannot Self Terminate: Maybe they're horribly injured, or maybe they've been mutated into a horrific monster. Either way, they can't tell anyone that they want to die--though no one doubts it. Will you be the one to take mercy on them?
  3. Execution: Once again, self-explanatory. You fought the law and the law won. This is probably the last time anyone will see you...or is the other character your executioner?
  4. Secretly Dying: Letting your friends and family know that you're terminally ill, or have been marked for death, or have a curse placed on you? No way. You'd rather keep them at ease. But all lies exist to be found out...
  5. And Make You Watch: This person has hurt you in every possible way, but you can't bring yourself to kill them...looks like there's no recourse but to kill yourself. But before you do it, there's just one way you can twist the knife a little...
  6. Bungled Suicide: You don't want to die, but can't think of any way to live. Fortunately, one of your friends has stumbled in at just the right time...
  7. Murder: Pretty self-explanatory. One of your characters is trying to kill the other.
  8. Fatal Accident: Drowned? Caught in a fire? Happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time? All accidents and unhappy, untimely ends go here.
  9. Duel to the Death: You, sir/madam, have been offended in every possible way, and it's time to settle this once and for all.
  10. Old Age: Well, you've had a good run, haven't you? Somehow you managed to avoid all the other pitfalls your friends have, but everybody has to pay the piper eventually...
  11. Ghost: You're already dead. But you had some unfinished business to attend to, so you're making just one last visit...
  12. Other: Make up something or combine two or three!

[Clint smiles faintly, fatigue settling around his eyes like weights. His shoulders sag and he can't seem to get that half-smile to quite reach the rest of him.]

You could say that. [He blows out a breath, trying to relieve some of the pressure in his head, or at least cool down enough to see better through the sweat. Wiping his forehead, he only manages to clean some of it off, but it's enough.]

Looks like you've had worse. [He doesn't need to even flick his gaze up at the IV and bloodbags hanging about Coulson's bed like macabre holiday decorations.]

[The smile remains, but turns bitter. Phil would love to play the banter game, but he can't bring himself to do much joking in this situation.]

Yeah, I guess.

[He gives Clint a quick once-over, brow furrowing slightly. The last time he saw the fellow agent, he was brainwashed and attacking the Helicarrier.

He pushes the memory away.]

You okay?

[Honestly, Clint appreciates dropping the banter. He does it well enough, but he's a bit more serious-natured, a soldier.]

I'm not going to shoot anyone. [It's honest and it's the answer he assumes his superior wants. He knows what he's done, brutally aware that he took lives, caused the deaths of other agents. The guilt hooks onto that fatigue and weighs him down further.

He breathes out slowly in a soft sigh.
] How about you?

[Well, that's unfortunate.

Phil lifts a hand and winces—are all those IV tubes really necessary?—to rub his face.]

Honestly, no.

I mean, all this—

[He gestures to the medical equipment.]

This is fine. I've dealt with worse. But. [And here he bites his lip, unsure of how to continue.]

[Clint doesn't expect that answer. His eyebrows furrow, lips perse just slightly as his gaze centers on Phil. A spark of concern glimmering in his eyes.]

But.

[It's only one word, but it's the only word that matters right now. Clint unconsciously sits a little straighter, that uneasy feeling from before multiplying in his gut.]

[Phil tries sitting up, but all he manages to do instead is wince violently and groan.

Ow.]

It's—

[He doesn't know he's about to echo Natasha's words exactly. Except when he says them, they're more rushed, more urgent—and, unlike Natasha, he doesn't bother trying to hide the emotion behind them.

His back may hurt, but this hurts much more.]

I do.

[It hurt to say it. Sabriel had several such solutions, including the knife in her boot, her sword, and a few of her bells. But what he was asking- it would be kinder than a slow death.

Sabriel generally wasn't one for physical affection, but she let out another sob as she felt his arm on her shoulder, and her arms fell around him in a loose hug.]

Lie down. This- it will be just like falling asleep.

[Gently, Sabriel began to take Ranna from her chest. Her other hand brushed against the mask. It seemed wrong to keep it on at a time like this.]

[It was a day Giles had dreaded, in the back of his mind, for a very long time.

And now, now it had finally come. The halls of Sprensonne Academy once again knew true, complete evil, and all the safety measures they'd put in place to keep this last remnant of Apep at bay had all proven for nothing.

Giles had known since first learning of Apep's existence that he'd probably be the first on the chopping block. That hadn't made it any easier to finally be caught and subdued.

He's tossed into Helios' room as easily as a rag doll, and by the time he recovers his wits, the door has been slammed and locked.

[ There's nothing, for a few brief agonizing seconds, and then the darkness of the room seems to meld and form itself into a figure in the corner of the room. Helios' eyes are red and black now the normal beautiful emerald shade gone from them. He holds himself differently now too, as if there wasn't anything in the world to stop him. There's an oppressive force in the air too as if it's too thick and too heavy to breath it in properly. Giles might have some trouble doing so, but Helios is otherwise fine. ] It's so nice to finally catch you alone. I was looking for a toy to play with. Helios seems to had a fondness for you as well.

[ His smiles stretched into a vicious grin. ] I'm going to love making him watch what I do to you.

[Giles can't hold back a gasp of surprise and fear as Helios...as Apep...suddenly materializes in the room, out of the darkness itself. He pushes himself up into a crouch, staring in anguish up at his friend. The very air is heavy with power, and evil, and he finds himself panting for reasons beyond fear.

He won't let himself acknowledge that fear, though, not yet.]

Helios...Helios, you, y-you have to, to listen to me. Y-You're stronger than you were. You, y-you can fight him off. You can f-fight back.

[He makes to get back to his feet...to run, if he can, although he knows there's nowhere left to run to.]

[ Apep just lets out a chilling laugh, shaking his head as he flicks his wrist in a noncommittal action. Giles might feel himself be flung against the wall and into the headboard of the bed. ]

Spare me your empty words, mortal. Helios cannot hear you anymore. [ A pause as he lightly closes his eyes and smirks just a little. ] Well I suppose he can, but he cannot do anything to save you. You think a man as feeble as him could withstand me?!

[ There's a loud crack in the room as the desk cracks in have and the pressure all but slams Giles into the bed. ] He is nothing. Just as you will become nothing as well.

[Giles is a large man, a powerful one, but Apep flings him across the room like a leaf caught in a gale. The world goes briefly white as he slams into the headboard just over the bed, collapsing limply on it when the force releases him. Dazed and dizzied, the god's words come to him from far away, and he can't understand anything being said to him for a few seconds.

But then he does. Giles' jaw tightens as he pushes himself up onto his hands and knees, shakes his head to clear the ringing from his ears. No, Helios can hear him. He has to be able to hear him. Apep wouldn't be having half as much fun as it clearly is if he couldn't. And if he can hear...Helios can resist. He can fight. He has to.

If he can't...

Giles' thoughts are brutally cut off as the next lash of power slams him into the bed again. Almost as if Apep had read his mind and seen his thoughts of trying to resist or escape.

...he hopes that Apep can't read his mind, on top of everything else.

Bruised and winded, unable to hold back a grunt of pain, he decides to take a few seconds before trying to get up again.]

Such fragile minds and bodies you humans have. [ In the blink of an eye he's at the side of the bed looming over Giles with a crooked, twisted, grin. Black tendrils, upon closer inspection are snakes, writhe and hiss in anticipation. Apep smiles. ]

Soon my children. You'll be able to taste his flesh, soon. [ Or perhaps not. If Giles chooses to join his cause, perhaps he may live yet. A blade bladed knife appears in Apep's hands the hilt carved with ancient hieroglyphs in stunning ornate detail. ] Once I have returned to my true body I will lay waste to this world. I give you a choice, Rupert Giles, you who have touched darkness and chaos before. Join me and you shall have power beyond your most wild imagination.

[ He holds the knife in a seemingly blase sort of way. His look of contempt clear as he waits for Giles' answer. ]

[Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?

This close up, Giles is starting to understand just why Helios was always so terrified of them. He presses himself back against the wall, the better to put as much distance between himself and the hissing monstrosities and the triumphant god as he can, for all the good it will do.

He doesn't look up at Apep as he speaks. But the offer makes him flinch, eyes widening in undisguised surprise. Of all the things to be confronted with...he hadn't expected that.

And he contemplates it for a few seconds longer than he really should. Yes, he's touched darkness and chaos before. Yes, his younger self would have accepted without hesitation, and served Apep with devotion. And no, he really doesn't want to die here.]

...all right. I'll join you.

[But even as he says this much, Giles is grabbing for the knife he carries out of habit on his belt, and as soon as the words finish leaving his mouth, he tosses it at Apep's face.]

When hell freezes over.

[At this close range, he can't miss...

...can he?]
folklorist: (Something isn't right)

[personal profile] folklorist 2012-09-30 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He couldn't miss if it were a normal being inside that body. But it is not a normal being inside that body and the knife is about an inch from Apep's face when it stops dead in its trajectory. It simply floats there before the pointed edge flips over and turns back towards Giles.

Apep gives an impassive looks back at Giles and the knife he had tried to use. He flicks his wrist in another angry, jarring, motion. The knife flies towards Giles, only missing his head by an inch or two. That's not to say it hasn't cut his cheek though. ]
That simply won't do. Oh well. I'm sure you'll make a decent sacrifice then.

[ And as if on cue black, viscous tendrils ooze and drip out of the walls and ceiling. Their target is Giles' limbs and body and they'll stop at nothing to restrain the man in question. ]
consultmybooks: (Holding it Together)

[Well, it was worth a try. It was better than just meekly surrendering to his fate, at the least. Alight with adrenaline and anxiety and fear, Giles doesn't even notice the thin, bloody line drawn across his cheek.

But he does notice the tendrils of darkness coming out of the walls and the ceiling to bind him. Giles puts up a good fight - he always does - even making it off the bed for a brief second. But then one of the tendrils gets ahold of his wrist, and it's all over from there. For all his struggling, Giles is still restrained hand and foot within a few seconds, unable to move beyond some ineffectual squirming.

Panting heavily in the oppressive air and his own ineffectual efforts, Giles glares up at Apep, unwilling to let the demon wearing his best friend's face see his fear. Determined to be defiant to the last.]

I hope your bloody snakes choke on me.
folklorist: (I'm terribly sorry)

[personal profile] folklorist 2012-09-30 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
It's you who will be the one choking, dear Rupert. On your own blood. You chose this path for yourself, and Helios too. He's the one who will be doing the cutting and the ritual after all.

[ There's a quick flash of his hand and Giles will feel Helios' icy cold hand slap him across the face. He'll let out a foreign and dark laugh at the action, enjoying it far too much. He leans over the bed, before it creaks with his added weight. Apep will be straddling Giles, the black blade gripped tightly in his hands. The tendrils form into snakes, there and then, their fangs biting and tearing into Giles' ankles and wrists, drawing blood onto the comforter of the bed. Apep's smirk is one of amusement and satisfaction. ]

Struggle all you want, mortal. It will help you no more than a fly caught in a web. I can smell the fear on you. [ He closes his eyes taking a deep breath. And when his eyes open they are surprisingly their original color. Green but wrong still as if Helios is being forced against his will to raise that knife above his head. Helios' green eyes mist over with moisture and he bites his lip in an all too familiar action. ]

G-Giles. [ God he's so sorry. But he can't fight this, he can't overcome a god. ]
consultmybooks: (Go away go away go away)

[personal profile] consultmybooks 2012-09-30 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[The slap gets the biggest reaction out of Giles yet - he flinches, turning his head aside with the blow, and makes a soft little sound that somehow communicates just as much if not more than any cry of pain. It's such a humiliating, demeaning gesture at the best of times. And it's poetic, in a way. Those few times Giles has been overcome by some evil force, hadn't he always slapped Helios, struck him just like his brother had, to reinforce the other man's feelings of worthlessness and powerlessness?

Only now does Giles understand firsthand how effective that was. And even now, he feels sorry for ever letting it come to that.

He's too stunned even to struggle when he feels Apep's weight settling on top of him, pinning him more firmly to the bed. But he does try, when he realizes that the dark god is suddenly so much closer. The feelings of being trapped and powerless are overwhelming right now, and even as Giles looks away, he can feel the red and black gaze on him.

Of course, when he looks away, it's just in time to see the snakes take shape.

Giles can't stop a cry of startled pain as his restraints suddenly grow teeth, and those teeth tear into him. Snake's fangs, so much like a vampire's - he's been bitten by them before, but it's not a feeling you ever get used to, or adjust to. He can feel the pain of it even after the assault ends, the hot, burning pain of torn flesh and freely flowing blood. A couple of the snakes probably opened up some important veins.

Maybe he'll bleed out before Apep has the chance to be finished with him. Before Helios can be forced to see this...

Giles is so focused on the pain in his body, from the bruising to his cheek from that slap to the sight of his shredded-open wrist, that he doesn't even notice the change at first. Not until Helios speaks - then, there's no mistaking that voice, the pain and the anguish and the sorrow there. Giles' gaze snaps up to meet Helios' hazy green eyes. For a moment, he doesn't believe what he's seeing, wonders if he's hallucinating. Wonders if maybe, just maybe, Helios had actually overcome Apep.

But then he takes in the sight of the knife, raised to strike, and Giles understands.]

...I don't blame you.

[Whatever happens, it won't be Helios' fault. It might be the last words he gets to say to the other man, so Giles hopes he understands.]
